Mailed to me today:
"Dear Applicant:
Congratulations ! After a very careful evaluation of your audition, we are pleased to offer you a contract as a member of the 2004 National Youth Orchestra."
That about says it. I'm floored, still unable to grasp just how amazing this opportunity is. A month in residence at beautiful U.Vic., studying under Larry Knopp, and Vince Cichowicz, then a month touring across Canada. And the rep., my god the pieces this orchestra is going to play. Petroushka, Dvorak 7, Mahler 4, to name but a few.
I don't think I can tell anyone how much this means to me. I mean, this is my dream, literally my dream. My biggest ambition for my life right now. And I'm gonna fucking do it this summer. The sense of validation alone, that these amazing teachers think I'm worth it. I feel ten feet tall.
k, that's it, my one post where I get to brag, hee hee hee.

Mindless Self Indulgence - Fuck You Man! |
] |
Unusually enough for me, this entry is straight exposition. This week is craziness:
Sunday: I'm performing at a scholarship presentation. Basically a dry run for next Saturday. VKH.
Monday: noon: L'Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier's Tale), by Igor Stravinsky. We're doing it all, with one narrator also covering the Devil and Soldier. It is going to be awesome. VKH.
8pm: Tim's recital. It's going to be great as well. He's doing Ewazen's To Cast a Shadow..., for baritone, trumpet, and piano. A totally amazing experience. Oh, and I'm doing a little fanfare in it. VKH.
Tuesday: noon: my brass quintet recital! Sonic Assault presents the feel-good recital of the year! VKH.
Saturday: 1:30-4:30: London Music Scholarship Foundation. Round 2. I'm playing some amazing (and damn near impossible) pieces. Expect hotness. If I advance past this round, I pick up a hot $1500 and compete in the finals for up to $2500. That will be an open performance at... 8ish? VKH and VKH.
I don't think I'm going to bother changing out of my shirt and tie all week.

Jerry Falwell is a fucking lunatic. I just saw him on CNN for the first time. What an appropriate interviewee to respond to Bush's proclamation.
The last five seconds I heard: "And what about the plumbing? Anyone who knows about plumbing knows that God gave -" (Turned off in utter disgust)

First of all, stories like this one make me hyperventilate. I've been reading The Debate on the Constitution intermittently, and one of the great joys of those volumes was actually reading the American constitution. Like the (now repealed) Prohibition amendment, an article actually saying, "Hey gays, forget about marriage" seems a little, er, insane. I thought it was supposed to guarantee and protect the rights of Americans? What's even worse is people complaining it's "undemocratic" for a court to uphold standards of human rights. I wonder if they thought emancipation was undemocratic too...
( The L Word! ) Much more interesting than primetime tv drama.

Snoop Doggy Dogg - Doing It Bigg |

Since Christmas, and used book shopping beforehand, I've racked up a ridiculously long reading list:
Harriet Beecher Stowe, Uncle Tom's Cabin Robertson Davies, Murther and Walking Spirits Noam Chomsky, Hegemony or Survival David Guterson, Snow Falling on Cedars Madeline Bruser, The Art of Practicing Herbert Bensen, The Relaxation Response various, The Debate on the Constitution, vol. 1 and 2 (2000 pages, yikes!) Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness Vladimir Nabokov, Pale Fire James Joyce, Dubliners Virginia Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway Thomas Hardy, The Return of the Native And there is a copy of Steppenwolf hiding somewhere in my room as well.
Crap that's a lot of reading... I should be through those by the time I'm... 50? It's time to make a battle plan!

| Back to London |
[04 Jan 2004|03:47am] |
|
I hung out with bubbleteagirl, hisroyaldudenes and responsiblejei until nearly 3am, and then I came home and packed all my crap up. Since I have to "wake up" at 4:30 anyways, I have to kill some time before I go back to schooltown. So it's the ol' 4am journal post.
When I was sitting with Marilee today, I said how I couldn't believe it was already time for me to go back. 3 weeks seems more like three days. Of course, when I reflect back, lots of happened. As she pointed out, it seems like Marilee's party was ages ago. I've really sort of divided the holiday up into (pre-)Christmas (Marilee's party, family events), post Christmas (boxing day, Marilee leaving), and New Yearsy (Marilee coming back, Marilee being sick). Hrm, life is but a dream?
Anyways, on reflection, lots of cool stuff has happened, like meeting folks at the coffee house or buying a nice coat, but it's been definitely low-key, from the smaller family gatherings (well, ten people, but still...) to the quiet last night in town.
Really, when I think back, there aren't a lot of stand-out moments in this holiday for me. And I've certainly let myself go: not practicing much, not reading enough, eating too many cookies - the list goes on: all those wonderfully decadent things I don't let myself do in London. It's a holiday that stood out for its mediocrity. And sometimes it's nice to do a mediocre job.
I hope the floor has been replaced in my house.

First of all: hehe!
Anyways, New Year's was a bit of a bust: Marilee is pretty sick with the stomach flu so we stayed in and watched Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Don't get me wrong, Khan is a sweet flick, but it's too bad being cooped up inside all lame for New Year's while your friends party. We had an okay time though.
So our new fascination (Marilee, her bro, and me) are those puzzles where you slide the ring or whatever off the wire frame. We've gone through like six of them or something. I'm gonna go do that. Then sleep.
Happy New Year's all.

Ministry of Sound: The Annual 2004 |
] |
Late Christmas night I hung out with bubbleteagirl and her brother hisroyaldudenes. We went driving around at 1am to see what was open: Blenz, one McDonald's, and Denny's. Naturally, we stopped in at Denny's for a bite. It was pretty fun, because we were all hysterical from tiredness and t(of)urkey. Afterwards we drove by A&B and Future Shop to see all the psychos lining up outside at 1am. There was one crazy guy, first in line at Future Shop, who sat right in front of the doors, with his lawn chair facing into the store. Looked kinda freaky.
We all went to those shops on Boxing Day anyways, albeit in the late afternoon. At Future Shop hisroyaldudenes picked up a box set of all the Star Trek movies, even the TNG ones. At A&B I picked up the cds I mentioned in my last post. The Love Below and the new Basement Jaxx are both pretty awesome. Well, so is the Ministry of Sound Annual.
Over the weekend I didn't do much, what with Marilee and co. being off to the 'Toon (aw, they got the stink lines and everything!) But last night we hung out again. Since I recently came across a nice red scarf, and have been wearing a fairly goofy hat, I decided to ditch my ugly old fleece and find a nice classy coat-dealie. I got a nice overcoat from my grandfather's closet, but it was a little large, and not really what I was looking for. In fact, it made me look like littleisaac... or a hobo.
To make a long story short, my dream coat at Banana Republic was actually half off, so I got a $300 coat for $150. It's so damn pretty!
